Our quality of life depends on healthy water resources. As Canadians, we are fortunate to live in a country with a vast freshwater supply. But this water supply is not infinite and mounting pressures from increasing development, tourism, business and agriculture have had significant impacts on the quality and quantity of water resources. Balancing environmental concerns with sustainable living and economic growth is essential to the future health of water resources and is a shared responsibility among all Canadians. Centre for Sustainable Watersheds (CSW) is a non-governmental, non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to facilitating community involvement in water resource protection in Canada. Our mandate is to serve and promote the importance of cooperative approaches to the protection of water resources; one that rests on the basis of collaboration among stakeholders. We work with a broad range of water resource stewardship groups across Canada to facilitate information-sharing, improve the channels of communication, support consistency in program delivery, and make the most effective use of limited resources. Partnering with leading researchers in the field, we endeavour to improve upon the current understandings in water resource science and management, and demonstrate ways to link science and social progress. As an advocate of hands-on learning for the public of all ages, we aim to bring science to common terms, underscoring the connection between watershed processes and ecosystem well being, and the role of community in ensuring sustainable use of shared resources.
